NERC Urges Investors to Exploit Regulatory Frameworks to Boost Power Supply
The Commission’s Director of Economic Regulation, Abba Terab, who represented its Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, made the call during an interactive panel session at the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
Speaking at the session themed “Power Growth: Reliable Electricity for Industry and Prosperity,” Terab said NERC had established regulatory instruments to facilitate viable transactions and attract private sector capital into the electricity market.
He explained that the Federal Government had continued to liberalise the power sector through the Electricity Act and supporting NERC regulations in pursuit of the Vision 30:30:30 target.
Terab identified decentralised electricity supply models, including embedded generation, as key strategies for expanding access to reliable electricity and creating investment opportunities in the sector.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Chijioke Okwuokenye, highlighted the role of regulation in promoting embedded generation and net billing arrangements to accelerate access to renewable energy.
The Managing Director of Elektron, Deen Solebo, said government efforts to strengthen gas-to-power infrastructure would enable medium-scale power plants to serve specific geographical areas and clusters of customers more efficiently.
Similarly, the Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, stressed the need for a viable electricity market where power supplied to customers is delivered reliably and paid for accordingly.
The panel was moderated by Jumoke Delano, Managing Consultant at Competence Builders International.
The annual summit was organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group to promote economic reforms aimed at building an open, inclusive, sustainable and globally competitive private sector-led economy.
