TotalEnergies and CMA CGM Launch Joint Venture to Deliver LNG Bunkering at Europe’s Busiest Port
In a significant move to accelerate the decarbonization of global shipping, TotalEnergies and French shipping powerhouse CMA CGM Group have announced a 50/50 joint venture to provide LNG bunkering services at the Port of Rotterdam — the largest seaport in Europe.
The venture marks the first-ever collaboration between an energy major and a global shipping group to co-develop and jointly operate liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering infrastructure.
“This strategic partnership reflects our shared ambition to accelerate the energy transition in the maritime sector,” TotalEnergies said in an official statement on Wednesday.
⚓ A Full-Service LNG Bunkering Solution
Under the agreement, the joint venture will launch operations with the deployment of a new 20,000 cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel in Rotterdam by the end of 2028. This vessel will serve a wide range of ships operating in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) corridor, including vessels from CMA CGM and other maritime operators.
The LNG logistics chain will span:
-
Reload access at the Gate terminal
-
Seamless LNG bunker delivery to vessels
-
Support for maritime operators looking to reduce fuel oil dependency
TotalEnergies already operates the Gas Agility, an LNG bunker vessel in the ARA region since 2020, which will complement this new expansion.
🔄 Long-Term LNG Supply Agreement
Beyond the bunkering collaboration, TotalEnergies will also supply up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually to CMA CGM, starting in 2028 and continuing through 2040, under a long-term fuel supply agreement.
“LNG is the most mature and readily available solution to reduce maritime transport’s carbon footprint,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
“When used as marine fuel, LNG can cut shipping emissions by around 20% compared to traditional fuel oil.”
CMA CGM’s Chairman and CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, called the joint venture a “concrete step” toward scaling up alternative fuels and advancing the decarbonization of global trade.
🌍 Toward a Cleaner Shipping Future
This bold partnership showcases how energy and shipping leaders can collaborate to address one of the sector’s toughest challenges: reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a heavily fossil-fuel-dependent industry.
By combining TotalEnergies’ LNG expertise and infrastructure with CMA CGM’s vast maritime network, the two companies aim to lead the shift toward cleaner, more sustainable global shipping solutions.
