Tinubu Reconstitutes NERC Board Following Senate Confirmation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16.

The reconstituted board is expected to strengthen regulatory oversight and deepen ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector in line with the Electricity Act, 2023.

At the helm of the new board is Dr Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, who has been appointed Chairman. Dr Oseni began his service at NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and was later appointed Vice Chairman of the Commission. His appointment as Chairman took effect from December 1, 2025, and will subsist until the completion of his 10-year tenure at the Commission, in accordance with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

Dr Yusuf Ali was designated Vice Chairman of the Commission. He was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, and his designation as Vice Chairman took effect from December 1, 2025. He will serve in that capacity until the completion of his first term.

Other members of the reconstituted board include Mr Nathan Rogers Shatti, who is serving a second term as Commissioner, having first been appointed in January 2017, and Mr Dafe Akpeneye, also serving a second term after his initial appointment in January 2017.

Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello continues on the board for a second term, following her first appointment as Commissioner in December 2020, while Dr Chidi Ike is serving his first term, having been appointed in February 2022.

Also joining the board is Dr Fouad Animashaun, whose first term as Commissioner takes effect from December 2025. Dr Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu has charged the newly constituted board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s electricity sector, urging members to discharge their responsibilities in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.

The reconstitution of the NERC board is seen as a critical step in strengthening regulation, improving sector governance, and supporting the Federal Government’s broader agenda to enhance reliability, efficiency, and investment across the power industry.
