Stakeholders Urge Inclusive Approach to Energy Transition at National Dialogue.

Stakeholders gathered at the National Dialogue on Energy Transition Plan in Port Harcourt have called upon the federal government to ensure the active involvement of communities, local, and state governments in its energy transition initiatives. The event, organized by several foundations and advocacy groups, with support from 350.Org, produced key resolutions aimed at advancing sustainable energy practices in Nigeria.

Dr. Gbenemene Kpae, a resource person at the dialogue, emphasized the importance of making renewable energy accessible to low-income earners. He advocated for government policies incentivizing private sector investment in renewable energy to ensure affordability for all citizens. Kpae stressed the need for collaboration between the government and private sector to create job opportunities and facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

Mr. Friday Nbani, Executive Director of Lekeh Foundation, praised the government’s energy transition plan but stressed the importance of tailoring it to the Niger Delta region, which suffers from environmental degradation due to fossil fuel activities.

Mr. Smith Nwokocha, Coordinator of Quest for Growth and Development Foundation, emphasized the necessity of equitable and localized energy transition strategies to address climate-related challenges. He urged the government to engage stakeholders at all levels and prioritize short, medium, and long-term actions to bridge gaps in the transition process.
