Shell Outlines Key Strategies to Accelerate Nigeria’s Gas Sector Growth
Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG), the country’s leading gas distribution firm, has identified infrastructure development, regulatory stability, and technology adoption as crucial levers for unlocking Nigeria’s gas sector potential.
Speaking during a panel session titled “Accelerating Gas Development for Domestic and Global Energy Needs” at the Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference in Abuja, Managing Director of SNG, Ralph Gbobo, emphasized the urgent need for massive investments in gas infrastructure, including pipelines, processing plants, and distribution networks.
Gbobo noted that beyond physical infrastructure, the sector requires strong regulatory and fiscal frameworks that inspire investor confidence. “A stable and transparent regulatory and fiscal regime is essential to creating a predictable and secure operating environment,” he said.
He also highlighted the role of advanced technologies in modernizing gas operations. “Technological innovations—such as real-time data analytics, remote monitoring, autonomous operations systems, smart metering, and predictive analytics—are key to improving the efficiency, sustainability, and attractiveness of the domestic gas sector,” Gbobo added.
Providing updates on SNG’s expansion drive, Gbobo revealed that the company is developing new gas distribution networks in Oyo and Bayelsa States, while extending its reach to industries in Ogun, Rivers, and Abia States. He attributed the company’s progress to strategic partnerships and collaboration, which he said help aggregate capital, transfer knowledge, and build local capacity.
Shell’s involvement at the NOG Conference also included sponsorship of a dinner event. Delivering remarks on behalf of Executive Vice President and Country Chair, Shell Nigeria, Marno de Jong, the company’s Vice President for Gas and Commercial, Rohan D’Souza, praised the conference for fostering dialogue among stakeholders.
“Shell has been part of the NOG story and is Diamond sponsor of this year’s event in line with our longstanding commitment to the development of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector,” Marno said, reflecting on Shell’s over 60-year history in the country.
The 2025 NOG Conference brought together policymakers, industry executives, and investors to discuss strategies for energy development and transition across Africa.
