Leaders of EA/EJA Oilfields Communities Seek Protection of Stakeholder Interests

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – In a declaration, leaders representing the host communities of OML79, operating under the banner of the EA/EJA Oilfields Communities Traditional Rulers Leadership Forum, have issued a caution to Shell against proceeding with the sale of its onshore assets without involving them as critical stakeholders.

Pressing for Stakeholder Inclusion

During a press conference held in Yenagoa on Wednesday, the Forum expressed their concern that Shell’s potential sale of OML79 assets must consider and safeguard the interests of the communities directly affected. The leaders emphasized that, as stakeholders, they play a pivotal role and must be actively engaged in any decision-making process related to the sale.

History of Support and Enabling Environment

HRH Decca Keredei, the spokesperson for the EA/EJA Oilfields Communities Traditional Rulers Leadership Forum, highlighted the long-standing history of support provided by the host communities since the discovery of the EA fields in 1958. Keredei underscored the enabling environment created for Shell to operate successfully, without disruptions to their operations.

Community Capacity to Purchase and Operate Assets

Expressing bewilderment at Shell’s lack of prior notice, Keredei pointed out that the host communities possess the capacity to acquire and independently operate the assets. The Forum revealed that they have already submitted a petition to the Minister of Petroleum and other regulatory agencies, seeking intervention in the matter. They further called upon both federal and state governments to intervene and ensure a fair resolution.

Warning of Potential Unrest

The Forum issued a stern warning, stating that if the stakeholders are not actively involved in the sale, the transition to new ownership may face resistance. They urged the federal and state governments to mediate between the host communities and Shell to avert any potential unrest.

Emphasizing their commitment to protecting community interests, the Forum conveyed dissatisfaction with the non-fulfillment of promises, including a peace bonus payment. They urged Shell to provide transparency in the sale process, as well as inform and involve the host communities, just as they had been consulted at the initiation of operations.
