NUPRC collaborates with a Coalition for Methane Mitigation from Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has collaborated with Climate and Clean Air Coalition to mitigate methane originating from the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

According to NUPRC in a statement posted on its Facebook handle, this collaborative effort is a step towards addressing environmental challeng- es associated with the energy indus- try. The Commission by this collabora- tion, intends to leverage the expertise and resources of Climate and Clean Air Coalition, a United Nations En- vironment Programme (UNEP) con- vened initiative.

Byju’s, an Indian multinational educa- tional technology company, defines methane as the simplest of saturated hydrocarbons, consisting of four hy- drogen atoms and one carbon atom.

“Nigeria is poised to receive substan- tial support in its endeavor to mitigate methane emissions originating from the oil and gas sector, through a col- laboration between the Nigerian Up-stream Petroleum Regulatory Com- mission and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition,” NUPRC said.

“This collaborative effort signifies a significant step towards addressing environmental challenges associated with the energy industry.

“Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has been a growing concern globally, and this partnership is tailored to bol- ster Nigeria’s initiatives in curbing its impact on climate change.

“As a prime regulator in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas sector, the Nigerian Up- stream Petroleum Regulatory Com- mission, is set to leverage the exper- tise and resources of Climate and Clean Air Coalition.

“This collaboration that encompass- es a multifaceted approach, includ- ing knowledge sharing, technological support, and joint research efforts, is aimed at devising effective methane mitigation strategies.

“The Climate and Clean Air Coalition, Renowned for its dedication to air quality and climate related initiatives, the Climate and and Clean Air Coali- tion is bringing its wealth of experi- ence to the partnership.

“As nations worldwide intensify ef- forts to adopt sustainable practices, partnerships like these demonstrates collective commitment to mitigating the environmental footprint of indus- trial activities.”

In an overview on its website, the Co- alition says: “This project responds to the request by Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment, Upstream Petro- leum Regulatory Commission and Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency for services to develop policies and regulations to ensure uptake of recent CCAC-fund- ed Guidelines to mitigate methane from oil and gas sector. It also seeks to strengthen institutional capacity for MRV in oil and gas sector to support implementation of the same guide- lines.”
