NNPC Restores Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline to Full Operations After December Explosion, Boosting Gas Supply and Energy Security

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced the full restoration of operations on the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS), bringing relief to power producers, industrial users, and gas-dependent sectors following a disruptive explosion that interrupted gas supply earlier in December.

In a statement issued on Monday by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, the national oil company confirmed that the critical gas pipeline infrastructure located in Warri, Delta State, has been successfully repaired, tested, and recommissioned after the incident that occurred on December 10, 2025.

Swift Emergency Response and Repairs

According to NNPC Ltd, emergency response protocols were immediately activated once the explosion was detected. Containment measures were swiftly deployed to prevent escalation, minimise environmental impact, and safeguard surrounding communities and assets.

The company disclosed that multidisciplinary technical teams were mobilised without delay to assess the damage, isolate the affected section of the pipeline, and commence repairs under strict safety and operational standards.

“These teams carried out extensive repair works, pressure testing, and integrity assessments to ensure that the pipeline was safely returned to full operational capacity,” the statement said.

Following the successful completion of repairs and verification procedures, the pipeline was recommissioned and declared fully operational.

“Today, the pipeline is fully operational, reaffirming our resilience and commitment to energy security,” NNPC Ltd stated.

Strategic Importance of the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline

The Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System is one of Nigeria’s most critical gas transmission infrastructures, transporting natural gas from the Escravos gas hub in the Niger Delta to Lagos and other industrial corridors in the southwest.

Gas delivered through ELPS supplies thermal power plants, manufacturing facilities, and other strategic consumers, making its reliability central to electricity generation and industrial productivity.

Industry analysts note that disruptions to the pipeline often have ripple effects across the power sector, worsening electricity shortages and increasing reliance on alternative fuels.

The restoration of ELPS operations is therefore expected to stabilise gas supply to power plants and reduce pressure on the national grid.

Collaboration with Communities and Regulators

NNPC Ltd attributed the speed and success of the restoration effort to strong collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including host communities, regulatory authorities, security agencies, and its technical partners.

The company emphasised that community cooperation played a vital role in ensuring access, safety, and smooth execution of repair activities.

“The recovery process reflects a collective effort that turned a challenging situation into a success story,” the company noted.

Commitment to Safety, Environment, and Asset Integrity

Beyond restoring operations, NNPC Ltd reiterated its commitment to environmental protection, community safety, and the long-term integrity of Nigeria’s critical energy infrastructure.

“As we move forward, NNPC Limited remains steadfast in its pledge to protect our environment, safeguard our communities, and maintain the integrity and reliability of our assets,” the statement added.

The company thanked stakeholders for their patience and support, reaffirming its broader mission to ensure energy security and support national economic growth.

“Thank you for your trust as we continue to power progress for Nigeria, together,” NNPC Ltd concluded.
