In a significant move toward promoting cleaner energy and reducing transportation costs, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).
The handover ceremony, held on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, marks another step in the Company’s continued support for the Federal Government’s drive toward cleaner, more sustainable fuel alternatives.
Speaking during the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, reaffirmed the Company’s dedication to advancing Nigeria’s gas transition agenda. He highlighted the Company’s ongoing investments in gas infrastructure, supply, distribution, and retail outlets across the country.
“I am proud that NNPC Ltd is playing a pivotal role in driving the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards energy transition,” Ojulari said.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, lauded the initiative as more than just a donation of buses. He described the CNG vehicles as symbols of economic relief, environmental sustainability, and improved social equity.
“They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” he stated.
Ekpo emphasized that the initiative directly reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes reducing petrol dependency, lowering transportation costs, and utilizing Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves for the benefit of its citizens.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd, noted that CNG adoption offers significant economic advantages, including reducing reliance on premium motor spirit (PMS) and automotive gas oil (AGO), while supporting the local gas industry’s expansion.

On his part, the Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy, emphasized that NNPC Ltd remains at the forefront of CNG commercialisation and will continue to lead efforts in cleaner energy solutions.
Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, added that the initiative reflects the Company’s broader vision to serve people, communities, and the planet through purpose-driven energy innovations.
The Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, praised NNPC Ltd for being a dependable partner since the inception of the Pi-CNG. He stressed that the partnership reinforces national efforts to expand access to affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.
