NLNG Bids Farewell to MD Philip Mshelbila as Adeleye Falade Named Successor

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has formally marked the end of an era as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Philip Mshelbila, prepares to bow out of office after more than four years of transformative leadership.

The company on Friday held a symbolic sendoff ceremony in Abuja in honour of Mshelbila, whose tenure was widely described as pivotal in strengthening NLNG’s resilience, sustainability agenda, and global relevance amid unprecedented industry challenges.

Following the approval of the NLNG Board of Directors, Engineer Adeleye Falade has been appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Falade, currently serving as Managing Director and CEO of Brunei LNG, is expected to assume office in April 2026.

Mshelbila is scheduled to leave NLNG on December 31, 2025, to take up his new international role as Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar.

The Abuja sendoff ceremony attracted NLNG directors, senior executives from shareholder companies, top public sector officials, key players in Nigeria’s energy industry, members of NLNG management, and representatives of various staff groups.

In his remarks, NLNG’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr Olakunle Osobu, described Mshelbila as a leader of rare distinction whose professional background spans medicine, environmental health, strategic business leadership, and global gas diplomacy.

Osobu recalled that Mshelbila assumed office during one of the most turbulent periods in the company’s history, marked by the aftermath of COVID-19, devastating floods that disrupted gas pipelines, widespread vandalism, force majeure declarations by gas suppliers, and global energy shocks triggered by the Russia–Ukraine war.

Despite these challenges, Osobu said Mshelbila remained focused on driving business sustainability, diversifying operations, strengthening safety standards, and advancing emissions control.

He highlighted a major milestone achieved under Mshelbila’s leadership: the expansion of NLNG’s feed-gas supply base beyond its traditional shareholder joint-venture structure. In August 2025, NLNG successfully negotiated and signed long-term Gas Supply Agreements with six third-party gas suppliers, securing an estimated 1,290 million standard cubic feet per day of feed-gas—a development Osobu described as a historic and seismic shift for the company.

Osobu added that Mshelbila championed innovation and led a far-reaching transformation programme that redefined NLNG’s business model and laid a solid foundation for long-term value creation.

Also speaking at the event, NLNG’s General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mrs Sophia Horsfall, paid glowing tribute to the outgoing MD, praising his humility, clarity of vision, and steadfast leadership.

“You led with humility, yet you inspired greatness. You carried the weight of challenges with calm resolve and charted a path toward sustainability long before it became fashionable,” she said.

In his response, Mshelbila expressed deep appreciation to NLNG’s shareholders, Board of Directors, employees, and industry partners for their unwavering support. He said the culture of innovation and excellence at NLNG would continue to guide him in his new role at the GECF, where he intends to promote natural gas as a reliable and sustainable energy source while strengthening cooperation between gas-producing and gas-consuming nations.
