Nigerian Navy reports a decrease in crude theft and maritime crimes in the Niger Delta region.

Nigerian Navy Ship Delta revealed on Tuesday that there has been a noticeable decline in the occurrence of crude oil theft and other maritime crimes within the Niger Delta region.

During a farewell parade held in his honor at the Warri Naval Base, the outgoing Commander of the NNS Delta, Commodore Chindo Yahaya, specifically emphasized that the negative trends “have significantly diminished in the areas where we operate.”

Key moments of the event included the formalities of signing handover notes, raising and lowering of the pennant, presenting the unit flag, and inaugurating a car park at the base.

Representatives from various military and paramilitary agencies, as well as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, were also present at the occasion.

Yahaya reflected on his tenure, which began on May 2, 2023, as the 13th Commander of the NNS Delta. Despite facing numerous challenges, he noted that his leadership had achieved notable successes in the operational zones, including the dismantling of illegal refining sites and the apprehension of sea pirates and robbers.

He highlighted the efforts of the Base’s anti-crude oil theft team in apprehending suspects involved in crude oil theft and related offenses. Several vessels were also seized and subsequently handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution during his tenure.

Yahaya emphasized that NNS Delta actively participated in various clearance operations and exercises to secure the maritime environment and boost economic activities.

He stated, “I am pleased to report that our collective dedication has led to a commendable decrease in crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.”

He praised the cooperation and support received from the Delta State government, as well as military and paramilitary agencies operating within the NNS Delta’s jurisdiction. He also underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in maintaining peace in the operational areas.

Yahaya urged the officers, ratings, and civilian staff to maintain their dedication, focus, and discipline in line with the strategic directives of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS).

The incoming Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Muhsin Abba, assured journalists that personnel would be encouraged to fulfill their duties according to the Nigerian Navy’s mandates. He emphasized the importance of discipline, obedience, and loyalty, emphasizing that any actions undermining the country’s economic activities, particularly in oil production, would not be tolerated.
