Nigerian Gas Leader Takes Continental Role in Global Energy Body
Beijing, China — In a major boost to Nigeria’s standing in the global energy landscape, Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), has been appointed Africa Regional Coordinator of the International Gas Union (IGU). The announcement was made during the recently concluded World Gas Conference (WGC) held in Beijing.

The IGU’s decision to entrust Mr. Nwokedi with this strategic role underscores both his personal contributions and Nigeria’s broader influence in shaping Africa’s gas narrative. His new position places him at the center of IGU activities across Africa, bridging global gas policy initiatives with African realities and aspirations.
As Regional Coordinator, Mr. Nwokedi will serve as the IGU’s principal liaison for African member countries. His mandate includes championing pro-gas policies, facilitating knowledge exchange among stakeholders, promoting collaborative events, and providing strategic insights into regional energy trends. His appointment follows the tenure of Eng. Khaled AbuBakr of Egypt, who now serves as IGU Vice-President for the 2028–2031 term.
“This appointment is both an honour and a serious responsibility,” Mr. Nwokedi stated. “It affirms Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s gas sector and offers a valuable platform to advocate for sustainable, gas-driven development across the continent.”
The role of Regional Coordinator is pivotal for advancing gas infrastructure, promoting sustainability, and enhancing inter-African cooperation. Mr. Nwokedi’s selection signals growing recognition of Africa’s voice in shaping the future of global energy.
The NGA, as Nigeria’s foremost gas industry body, reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging natural gas for economic growth and regional integration. The IGU, meanwhile, continues its global mission to promote gas as a key pillar in achieving a sustainable energy future.
