Nigeria Seeks $60 Million in Climate Funding to Launch Green Energy Hubs

The Federal Government has opened discussions with global financial institutions to secure over $60 million in climate financing for the development of pilot green energy hubs across the country. One of the flagship projects under consideration is a hybrid energy facility at a major Nigerian airport, designed to serve as a model for clean, affordable, and digitally monitored energy use in strategic public infrastructure.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made the disclosure during the opening of the Decarbonising Infrastructure in Nigeria Summit held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The summit focused on unlocking climate finance as a pathway to sustainable national development.

Highlighting the urgent need for action, Shettima warned that continued inaction in the face of escalating climate threats would severely undermine Nigeria’s development goals and economic future.

“Climate action is no longer optional,” he said. “It is an economic necessity. Over 75 percent of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions come from key infrastructure sectors—energy, transport, agriculture, and urban development. These sectors are at the heart of our economy.”

He stressed that Nigeria’s rapid population growth—projected to exceed 440 million by 2050—would increase pressure on resources and worsen environmental degradation if climate measures are not implemented swiftly.

“To decarbonise is to invest in Nigeria’s prosperity,” Shettima declared.

The Vice President outlined several government-backed initiatives aimed at fostering climate resilience. These include the launch of a State Innovation Challenge Park, regional climate engagement clinics, and the introduction of a new white paper on green growth financing.

“Our transition must be inclusive,” he said. “It must reach every state, every community, every home. Inclusivity isn’t a bonus—it’s a foundation. Our goal is net-zero emissions, but the journey must begin locally and move quickly.”

Shettima called for policy alignment across federal, state, and local governments, and encouraged the use of innovative financing tools such as green bonds and climate investment funds. He emphasised that such instruments are critical to supporting local solutions and scaling up climate-smart technologies.

“The time for bullet points is over,” he concluded. “The time for bold action is now.”
