NDPHC Recovers Billions of Naira Power Equipment Abandoned at Ports
The company said the recovery would help prevent further financial losses while preserving critical equipment that could be deployed for ongoing power infrastructure projects.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the company’s management to the NPA headquarters in Marina, Lagos.
Adighije said the engagement was aimed at strengthening cooperation between NDPHC and the ports authority, particularly in facilitating the movement and clearance of equipment required for power projects.
She expressed appreciation to the NPA management for its role in helping the company recover cargoes that had remained stranded at different Nigerian ports.
According to her, the intervention saved NDPHC several billions of naira that could otherwise have been lost.
The equipment had been held at Nigerian ports for years due to contractual and litigation-related disputes. In March, NDPHC announced plans to recover 110 abandoned containers and 216 packages of critical power equipment that had remained at the ports for almost a decade.
The equipment was procured by engineering, procurement and construction contractors from 2007 for power plant projects but was subsequently stranded following disputes surrounding the contracts.
NDPHC said its current management had made the recovery of stranded assets, resolution of legacy debts and restoration of dormant generation capacity key priorities.
The company also disclosed that collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and support from the Customs Comptroller-General enabled it to secure the necessary waivers for the recovery of the equipment, which is worth millions of dollars.
The assets are expected to be deployed towards the completion of ongoing power projects.
Adighije also emphasised the importance of efficient logistics and prompt clearance of critical equipment to the delivery of power infrastructure projects.
She called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the energy and maritime sectors, noting that effective logistics remained essential to improving Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
The recovery comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and industry players to maximise existing power assets and address persistent challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
NDPHC has been working to restore dormant generation capacity and improve the performance of its National Integrated Power Projects as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure.
Responding, the NPA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abubakar Dantsoho, welcomed the NDPHC delegation and reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to partnerships that support national development.
Dantsoho commended NDPHC for its contribution to Nigeria’s power sector and assured the company of the NPA’s continued cooperation on initiatives that could promote economic growth and improve electricity supply.
