NDPHC Plans 1,500MW Power Injection to Bridge Lagos Electricity Deficit

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Engr. Jennifer Adighije, has announced the company’s readiness to boost electricity supply in Lagos State with an additional 1,500 megawatts (MW) of power.

She made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Mrs. Temitope George.

Adighije said NDPHC currently has about 2,000MW of stranded generation capacity and is well positioned to help address Lagos State’s widening electricity supply gap.

She noted that Lagos currently receives about 1,000MW from the national grid despite an estimated demand of nearly 12,000MW, creating a significant shortfall that affects economic activity and daily life.

According to her, NDPHC is ready to support the state through expanded generation capacity and investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure.

“Our mandate is fundamentally to scale up power generation alongside the associated transmission and distribution networks. We are uniquely positioned in the power sector because our operations cut across the entire electricity value chain,” she said.

She added that the company owns one of the largest generation portfolios in sub-Saharan Africa, with an installed capacity of about 4,000MW, but is only able to dispatch between 400MW and 500MW daily due to constraints.

This clearly shows that we have significant stranded capacity,” she said.

Adighije also referenced findings from the Lagos Electricity Market Report, which highlight the urgent need to bridge the state’s energy gap, adding that NDPHC is committed to supporting the process.

She described Lagos as a highly viable electricity market and said the company is willing to make major investments in infrastructure, particularly in transmission and distribution assets.

In response, LASERC Managing Director, George, reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving power supply and welcomed collaboration with NDPHC.

She said the commission is working to ensure some franchise areas in Lagos enjoy up to 24-hour electricity supply, expressing optimism that the partnership would improve reliability and access across the state.
