A Career Defined by Expertise and Impact

Dr. Akabogu’s expertise lies in commercial law, with a specific focus on maritime, energy, and international trade. He is the Senior Partner at Akabogu and Associates, a law firm specializing in shipping, maritime, petroleum, and international trade representation.

He is not only a skilled litigator and arbitrator but also possesses a deep understanding of the operational intricacies of the shipping and petroleum sectors. His experience encompasses consulting, legal representation (both disputes and transactions), and extensive contributions to capacity development and academic discourse within his field.

Dr. Akabogu’s impact extends far beyond legal practice. He has played a crucial role in shaping the Nigerian maritime industry, instrumental in drafting several significant legal instruments such as the Coastal and Inland Shipping Cabotage Act 2003, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Act 2007, and the Nigerian Ship Detention Regulations Merchant Shipping Act.

Beyond legal scholarship, Dr. Akabogu is actively involved in promoting industry development and engagement. He serves as the Executive Vice Chairman of OTL Downstream Development African Limited, a Pan-African initiative for downstream petroleum business and policy, and founded the Nigeria International Maritime Summit (NIMS) to advocate for industry stakeholders.

Celebrating Achievements and Recognizing Contributions

The birthday celebration served as a fitting tribute to Dr. Akabogu’s exceptional career. The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, lauded his contributions, remarking on his youthful energy and vast experience. He emphasized the significance of Dr. Akabogu’s books, stating, “We don’t have much books for our younger generation, so anybody who has the opportunity to sacrifice his time and put pen to papers and keep such experience like this, the maritime industry in Nigeria will keep on growing.”

Dr. Akabogu expressed his gratitude to the attendees, acknowledging their encouragement and stating, “The industry encourages me to do what I did and in collaboration we’ll keep doing what we need to do.”
