Lekki Port Hits 40,000 TEU Milestone, Expands Transshipment Network Across West Africa

Lekki Deep Sea Port has achieved a significant milestone, moving over 40,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) across West African seaports since launching transshipment operations in June 2023.

Speaking at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Freight Forwarders Group Conference, according to Leadership, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of Lekki Port, Daniel Odibe, highlighted the port’s growing influence in regional maritime trade.

The conference, themed “From Ports to Prosperity: Fixing the Links in Nigeria’s Supply Chain”, brought together port operators, Customs officials, freight forwarders, and trade facilitators to address critical gaps in Nigeria’s logistics ecosystem.

Odibe emphasized the port’s advanced capabilities, noting that nearly half of the recorded transshipment volume was achieved in just the first six months of 2025. “With a 16.5-meter draft and super-post-Panamax cranes, Lekki Port can receive the largest vessels in the world and discharge cargo swiftly. This saves shipping lines both time and cost,” he said.

He added that the port is collaborating with agencies and partners to extend its transshipment services to landlocked countries and reduce cargo dwell time.

Participants at the event urged the replication of Lekki Port’s “smart port” model nationwide to boost efficiency and competitiveness in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

“Lekki Port is not just operational—it is exemplary,” Odibe stated. “We are already working with agencies and partners to scale transipment into landlocked countries and reduce overall port dwell time. Seamless systems are not a luxury; they are a necessity.”
