Investment in Modern Power Infrastructure Urged to Prevent System Collapses

In response to the recent collapse of the national electricity transmission network on March 28, experts in the power industry are urging the Federal Government to prioritize investments in modern power infrastructure. This call comes amidst concerns over frequent system collapses affecting millions of homes and businesses across the country.

Experts highlighted the urgent need for strategic investments to prevent such debilitating grid failures. Mr. Chinedu Bosah, National Coordinator of the Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE), emphasized the necessity of reversing power privatization and focusing on transparent investments in modern infrastructure, under democratic control.

Bosah stressed that investments must prioritize public interest over personal enrichment, calling for transparent management by workers and consumers to combat corruption and inefficiency. He noted that system collapses are multifaceted, encompassing issues from transmission failures to inadequate generation by power companies.

Addressing the government’s plan to increase power generation from 3,500 MW to 6,500 MW, Bosah urged for a clear roadmap towards this goal, cautioning that mere promises without concrete plans would not address Nigeria’s power challenges. He also criticized calls for the privatization of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), citing past failures in the privatization of generation and distribution sectors.

Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Akinrolabu Olukayode, Chairman of the Customer Consultative Forum of Festac/Satellite Town, called for a thorough audit of past investments in the energy sector. Olukayode emphasized the need for fresh talent infusion to combat corruption and inefficiencies, advocating for a change in management approaches.

While acknowledging the potential of increasing generation capacity to mitigate power shortages, experts cautioned that a comprehensive strategy addressing infrastructure maintenance and management is crucial. They highlighted the importance of tracking and maintaining gas and water supply to maximize existing power plant capacities effectively.
