Illegal Refinery Uncovered in Anambra Forest by Joint Security Team
AWKA, ANAMBRA — A joint operation by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Army has uncovered a large illegal crude oil refinery hidden in the dense forests of Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The covert site, reportedly operational for several months, was equipped with makeshift refining units, large storage tanks, and pipelines used to process stolen crude oil into illicit petroleum products like diesel and kerosene. The discovery followed actionable intelligence aimed at curbing rising oil theft in the Southeast region.
Dozens of drums containing adulterated products were recovered at the scene, pointing to a commercial-scale operation. However, no arrests were made as suspects fled before the security team arrived.
NSCDC Anambra Commandant, Mr. Olatunde Maku, described the operation as a significant step in tackling economic sabotage. “This site posed serious risks to the economy, environment, and public safety. We are committed to dismantling such illegal operations across the region,” he said.
Officials believe the crude oil was sourced from the Niger Delta and transported to the forest for local processing. The entire site has now been dismantled and sealed off, with environmental experts assessing pollution levels caused by unsafe refining practices.
