In a significant step toward revitalising Nigeria’s power industry, the House of Representatives Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation has pledged collaboration with Egbin Power Plc to improve operational performance and strengthen electricity generation nationwide.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Hamisu Ibrahim, led a delegation on an oversight visit to Egbin Power’s facility, underscoring the legislature’s commitment to engaging key players in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) for better outcomes.

The delegation was joined by the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi, and his team. They were warmly received by Egbin Power CEO, Mokhtar Bounour, along with other members of the plant’s executive management.

During the visit, the lawmakers received a comprehensive briefing on the plant’s operations, followed by a guided tour of the facility. Committee members on the visit included Hon. Abdulmaleek Danga, Hon. Shehu Dalhatu, Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero, Hon. Sa’ad Wada Taura, and Hon. Ganiyu Ayuba.

While addressing the House Committee, CEO Mokhtar Bounour reaffirmed Egbin Power’s dedication to stable and reliable power generation as a driver of Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“Power is an essential utility that drives socio-economic progress,” Bounour said. “That is why we are focused on delivering best-in-class service, bringing energy to life responsibly in line with global best practices.”

Despite these achievements, he pointed out ongoing operational challenges that limit the company’s ability to reach full capacity, calling for collaborative efforts to overcome these hurdles.

Lawmakers Promise Legislative Backing

Speaking during the visit, Hon. Hamisu Ibrahim stated that the goal of the engagement was to better understand Egbin Power’s challenges and develop solutions to enhance its efficiency.

“The issues faced by Egbin Power are not unique; they are common to many GenCos across Nigeria,” Hon. Ibrahim observed. “We are committed to addressing these challenges through dialogue and collaboration. We are impressed with the plant’s operations and will support Egbin Power through the National Assembly to help improve performance.”

In his remarks, Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi of the BPE praised Egbin Power for its technical expertise, operational sustainability, and contribution to national development.

“Great job being done by the Board, management, and staff of Egbin Power in terms of best practices and performance,” Gbeleyi stated. “Your impact on the Nigerian power landscape is commendable—keep the flag flying.”
