Honeywell to Power Dangote’s Petrochemical Expansion with Advanced Technologies

Honeywell has announced plans to support a major petrochemical expansion by Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, in a move aimed at boosting local production of plastics and detergents while strengthening regional energy security.

The collaboration will see Honeywell deploy its advanced petrochemical process technologies and catalysts at the Dangote facility, enabling increased domestic manufacturing capacity and reducing reliance on imports across West Africa.

Central to the expansion is the adoption of Honeywell UOP’s Oleflex™ technology, which will allow Dangote to produce an additional 750,000 metric tonnes of propylene annually. The output is expected to support the production of packaging materials, consumer goods and a wide range of industrial products.

In addition, Dangote will utilise a suite of Honeywell UOP technologies to produce 400,000 metric tonnes per year of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), a key ingredient used in detergents and other cleaning products. At full capacity, the company’s Lekki-based LAB plant is projected to rank among the largest globally.

President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, Aliko Dangote, said the partnership aligns with the company’s broader goal of strengthening Nigeria’s industrial base and achieving supply chain independence.

“Our continued collaboration with Honeywell advances our vision to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial sector, supporting the nation’s supply chain independence and economic growth,” Dangote said.

“Honeywell’s technologies enable us to help the region meet rising demand for consumer and industrial goods, positioning Dangote as a global supplier and driving viable economic development throughout West Africa.”

The partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between the two companies, which has seen Honeywell provide process technologies, automation systems and engineering expertise for the refinery.

Dangote is also leveraging Honeywell’s solutions to scale up refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to a projected 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, a development that could position the facility as the largest petroleum refinery in the world.

President of Honeywell UOP, Rajesh Gattupalli, noted that the collaboration underscores the role of advanced technology in meeting global demand for petrochemical products.

“Dangote’s ongoing investments in advanced process technologies and digital solutions to maximize efficiency and throughput position it among the world’s leading refinery and petrochemical facilities,” he said.

“Honeywell is helping drive growth and long-term value by improving reliability and production in existing and new facilities. This collaboration demonstrates how advanced technology can help manufacturers meet the growing global demand for essential petrochemical products.”

The expansion is expected to enhance industrial growth, deepen regional supply chains and reinforce Nigeria’s position as a key player in the global petrochemical market.
