Gebrüder Weiss Cyclists Exceed One Million Kilometers in Global Effort to Protect Oceans
The 2025 edition of the initiative, which ran from April to October, drew nearly 800 cyclists from around the world, a notable increase from the previous year’s 600 participants. Together, they covered the equivalent of more than 26 trips around the world, turning their passion for cycling into a powerful environmental statement.
Operating under the theme “Cycling for the Seas,” Gebrüder Weiss pledged to remove one metric ton of plastic waste from rivers and coastal areas in Southeast Asia for every 100,000 kilometers cycled. This year’s total will fund the removal of ten metric tons of plastic waste by the end of 2025. The cleanup will be carried out in partnership with CleanHub, a Berlin-based environmental technology company that builds sustainable waste management systems in heavily polluted regions.
“Cycling makes a difference for yourself and for the environment. That’s what our GWcycles initiative stands for,” said Frank Haas, Head of Marketing & Communications at Gebrüder Weiss. “It’s inspiring to see our global community come together across borders to take meaningful climate action.”
To encourage participation, the company introduced milestone rewards and maintained a global leaderboard tracking individual distances. Kristian Buljan from Germany topped this year’s rankings, covering an impressive 19,022 kilometers.
