FG Applauds Dangote Refinery for Engineering Brilliance and Youth Empowerment

The Federal Government of Nigeria has praised the Dangote Petroleum Refinery for its exceptional engineering feats and unwavering commitment to developing young Nigerian talent, setting new benchmarks in both infrastructure and human capacity building.

During an official tour of the ultra-modern facility in Lagos, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, described the refinery as a “bold statement of what is possible” and lauded its dual focus on world-class operations and local human capital development.

“We are not just appreciating the bricks, mortar, and pipelines,” she said. “We’re inspired by the investment in young Nigerians—many of whom are now operating world-class equipment with precision and professionalism.”

As a seasoned university lecturer, Dr. Oduwole expressed particular pride in the young engineers, many of whom had never travelled abroad before receiving advanced training and working on the project. Their growth, she noted, is a clear example of what national capacity-building should look like.

🏗️ World-Class Facility, Made in Nigeria

Mr. Edwin Devakumar, Vice President, Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, showcased the scale and sophistication of the 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) facility. The refinery produces Euro-V standard petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene, exceeding Nigeria’s domestic demand and positioning the country as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

“We incorporate the latest technologies for environmental compliance while delivering globally competitive fuels,” Devakumar explained.

Some key features highlighted include:

  • A 435MW power plant, enough to power the entire Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company network (Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, Ekiti).

  • A self-sufficient marine terminal for crude intake and product shipping.

  • Advanced systems for safety, emissions control, and operational efficiency.

🌍 Exporting Skills, Not Just Fuel

One of the most remarkable achievements of the project lies in its human capital impact.

Devakumar revealed that the refinery trained around 60,000 skilled Nigerians during construction, many of whom are now working abroad as expatriate engineers in countries like the United Arab Emirates, contributing to Nigeria’s growing foreign remittance inflow.

“We’re one of the few companies globally to execute both a refinery and petrochemical complex as an EPC contractor,” he noted. “And our engineers are now adding value around the world.”

👷‍♀️ National and Professional Recognition

The refinery’s human capital strategy has drawn accolades from:

  • The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB)

  • The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE)

  • The Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE)

  • The Association of Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN)

  • The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)

These bodies have commended the active involvement of Nigerian professionals in the design, construction, and commissioning of the project—setting a new standard for local content in major infrastructure initiatives.

💡 A Game-Changer for Nigeria’s Economy

As the largest single-train refinery in the world, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is being hailed as a transformational project that will:

  • Ensure self-sufficiency in refined products

  • Drastically reduce imports

  • Stimulate economic growth

  • Create thousands of skilled jobs

The Federal Government’s commendation is a strong endorsement of the private sector’s role in Nigeria’s industrial future.

“This isn’t just a refinery—it’s a symbol of possibility,” said Dr. Oduwole. “And it’s happening right here in Lagos, Nigeria.”
