Eni Plans 230 Wells as El-Sisi Pushes Expansion of Egypt Gas Hub
El-Sisi made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with Eni Chief Executive Officer, Claudio Descalzi, in New Alamein City. The meeting was attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi.
The Egyptian presidency said El-Sisi praised Eni’s longstanding partnership with Egypt and its activities spanning research, drilling, exploration and community development.
The President also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to providing the necessary support and removing challenges that could affect Eni’s operations, while urging the company to expand its investments in the country.
Descalzi said Eni’s total investments in Egypt had reached $8.5bn, reaffirming the company’s commitment to strengthening its position as the largest energy company operating in the Egyptian market.
He said Eni would continue an integrated investment programme covering exploration, development and production activities across its concession areas, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Zohr gas field.
According to the Eni CEO, the company plans to drill 30 exploration wells and 200 development wells in Egypt during the coming period.
The company’s drilling and development plans are expected to cover 2026 and 2027, with particular focus on the Mediterranean Sea and Western Desert.
Eni said it would deploy advanced seismic surveying and Artificial Intelligence technologies as part of efforts to increase natural gas and crude oil production.
The meeting also focused on the proposed connection of Cyprus’ Cronos gas field to Egypt’s infrastructure.
Descalzi said linking the Cronos field to Egypt’s existing infrastructure could serve as a model for regional cooperation in the gas sector while strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional gas trading hub.
The Egyptian presidency said the development would further support Egypt’s ambitions in gas trading, liquefaction and exports.
The meeting also reviewed Eni’s community development initiatives in Egypt, including plans by the company to develop and manage a hospital.
El-Sisi stressed the importance of expanding exploration and production activities with Eni as part of efforts to deepen regional energy integration and consolidate Egypt’s role as a centre for gas trading and exports.
Eni is one of the major international energy companies operating in Egypt, with significant interests in oil and gas exploration and production, including the Zohr field in the Mediterranean Sea.
