DisCos Rake in N210.9bn Revenue in October Despite Drop in Billing Efficiency

Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos) recorded a total revenue collection of N210.92 billion in October 2025, reflecting an improvement from the previous month, even as overall billing efficiency declined, according to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
NERC’s latest Commercial Performance Factsheet shows that the DisCos received electricity valued at N303.85 billion from the national grid during the month. Of this amount, customers were billed N255.19 billion, translating to an industry-wide billing efficiency of 83.9 per cent, down from 86.43 per cent recorded in September.
the regulator stated that total energy received was N303.85 billion, while total energy billed stood at N255.19 billion, resulting in a billing efficiency of 83.9 per cent.
From the billed amount, DisCos collected N210.92 billion, representing a collection efficiency of approximately 82.6 per cent. This marks a slight improvement from September, when they collected N196.26 billion from N241.54 billion billed, achieving a collection efficiency of 81.25 per cent.
NERC noted that the revenue gap for October stood at N44.27 billion, marginally lower than the roughly N45 billion shortfall recorded in the preceding month.
Billing performance varied significantly across the 11 distribution companies. Kano DisCo topped the chart with a billing efficiency of 98.05 per cent, followed by Eko at 95.71 per cent and Ikeja at 94.36 per cent. Jos DisCo recorded 84.89 per cent, Kaduna 84.62 per cent, Abuja 84.05 per cent, Enugu 80.23 per cent and Port Harcourt 80.32 per cent. Ibadan posted 73.51 per cent, Yola 66.03 per cent, while Benin DisCo recorded the lowest billing efficiency at 65.32 per cent.
According to NERC, the wide disparities highlight persistent operational challenges within the sector, despite the higher volume of energy handled in October compared to the N279.45 billion received in September.
The regulator warned that the uneven billing and collection performance continues to strain liquidity across Nigeria’s power value chain, affecting remittances to generation companies (GenCos) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).
NERC attributed gradual improvements in revenue collection to enhanced metering, which stood at 56.07 per cent nationwide as of October 2025, as well as interventions such as the National Mass Metering Programme and stricter regulatory enforcement.
