Digital Revolution in Energy Enhances Efficiency and Safety – Yusuf
The Chairman of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Yunus Yusuf, has called for greater adoption of digital technology in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, describing it as the key to efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
Speaking at a NAN-NUJ conference, Yusuf noted that for decades, the oil and gas sector has been the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, fueling industrial growth and providing livelihoods to millions. However, he emphasized that the industry is now undergoing an unprecedented transformation driven by digital innovation.
Digital Transformation in Oil and Gas
According to Yusuf, the so-called “digital revolution” is not a buzzword but a fundamental shift in how energy is produced, managed, and delivered.
From artificial intelligence and machine learning improving exploration and drilling, to big data analytics enabling predictive maintenance and risk mitigation, digital technologies are reshaping operations across the industry.
“By embracing digital innovation, we can optimize operations, improve safety, cut costs, and promote environmental stewardship,” Yusuf said.
Preparing the Future Workforce
Addressing students and young professionals, Yusuf encouraged them to cultivate digital skills and innovative thinking, as their creativity and adaptability will be vital to shaping Nigeria’s energy future.
He also highlighted the indispensable role of security personnel, who must protect critical infrastructure against both physical threats and emerging cybersecurity risks in the digital era.
The Role of Journalists
Yusuf stressed that journalists have an even greater responsibility in this transformation, serving as a vital link between industry, government, and the public.
“It is incumbent on journalists to report technological advances with accuracy and integrity, educate the populace on their implications, and hold stakeholders accountable. Through our work, we foster transparency, trust, and informed public discourse,” he stated.
Nigeria’s Imperative for Change
The NAN-NUJ Chairman explained that the digital revolution in energy promises enhanced efficiency, greater safety, and reduced environmental impact.
It enables real-time decision-making, streamlines supply chains, and opens new avenues for innovation. For Nigeria, he emphasized, adopting digital tools is not merely an opportunity but an imperative to remain globally competitive and economically resilient.
However, Yusuf acknowledged that transformation also comes with challenges, including the need for robust infrastructure, skilled human capital, forward-thinking regulation, and ethical governance.
Call for Collaboration
He urged all stakeholders—including government, industry players, civil society, security agencies, and the media—to unite in driving digital transformation.
“Together, we can harness the power of digital technology to build a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable energy future for Nigeria,” Yusuf concluded.
