Community Leaders Urge Firms to Emulate Lafarge’s Example
Community leaders in Isoso, Shagamu GRA, Ogun State, have called on companies operating in the area to follow the example of Lafarge Africa Plc. in supporting host communities. The appeal came during the official handover of a new police station, donated by Lafarge Africa to enhance security in the community.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Royal Initiative for Development of Shagamu Community (RIDSCO), Mr. Sammy Ogunjimi, revealed that the police station project was initially conceived and started by the Isoso Community before financial challenges stalled it. According to him, the intervention of Lafarge Africa was crucial in completing the project.
“We faced challenges beyond our expectations and we reached out to Lafarge Africa for support. They accepted and today, we are here celebrating the handover. This would not have been possible without them,” Ogunjimi said.
He added that several development projects are ongoing in the community, stressing the need for more companies to partner with residents. “I urge other companies to emulate what Lafarge Africa is doing. Having this police station will improve security within the community and encourage growth.”
Police Commend Initiative
Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Dr. Lanre Ogunlowo, underscored the importance of security in industrial communities like Shagamu.
“While driving here, I understood firsthand the need for a police station in this vicinity. Communities often desire police presence, but there is a big difference between wanting something and making it happen. We are grateful for the resolve of the community and Lafarge Africa for making this possible,” he said.
Ogunlowo assured residents that the Nigeria Police would provide the required logistics and personnel to ensure effective operations at the new station. He also urged community members to hold the police accountable for the maintenance and proper use of the facility.
“Ogun State is Nigeria’s most industrialized state, and Shagamu is a key part of that. Businesses thrive where security is guaranteed, and we are committed to supporting that goal,” the commissioner added.
Lafarge Reaffirms Commitment to Host Communities
Representing Lafarge Africa Plc., the company’s Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships, Mr. Gabriel Pollyn, described the project as proof of the cement giant’s long-term commitment to public safety and host community development.
“This police station is a testament to Lafarge Africa’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life in the communities where we operate,” Pollyn said on behalf of the Group Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi.
