Chevron Nigeria Celebrates Excellence at 2025 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and CNL, joined stakeholders, educators, and industry leaders at the award ceremony of the 2025 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition held at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun.

The event brought together representatives of the Delta State Ministry of Education, the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), dignitaries from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), alongside teachers, students, and members of the media.

Chevron Reaffirms Commitment to Education

Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited—represented at the ceremony—reiterated the longstanding partnership between the NNPCL/CNL Joint Venture, the Chemical Society of Nigeria, and the Delta State Government.
He emphasized that the competition continues to play a vital role in promoting excellence in chemistry and strengthening science education across Delta State.

“We are delighted to witness the sustained commitment to the study of chemistry, as demonstrated by the outstanding performance of students in this year’s competition. Chevron, through the NNPCL/CNL JV, remains proud to be the sole sponsor of the Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition in Delta State since 1992. Our investment in education is motivated by the remarkable achievements of past awardees, many of whom have excelled in science-related disciplines both locally and internationally,” he said.

Top Performers Recognized

The ceremony featured the presentation of plaques, certificates, and other rewards to outstanding students.
This year’s first-place winner was Omazuwa Enousakhala Samuel of St. Augustine College, Oghara, who distinguished himself among participants from schools across Delta State.

Chevron’s consistent support was widely acknowledged in several goodwill messages delivered by dignitaries and stakeholders.

Aligned with Global and National Education Goals

Chevron Nigeria Limited noted that its commitment to education aligns with both the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Nigerian National Policy on Education.
The company continues to invest in quality education across the country through:

  • Infrastructure development

  • Manpower training programs

  • Longstanding scholarship initiatives

These efforts contribute to building self-worth among students, supporting community development, and promoting long-term national growth.
