AOW: Seplat Energy Eyes 500k BPD Production and $1B Dividend Payout in Aggressive Growth
The targets were announced by Engr. Effiong Okon, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Seplat Energy, during a fireside chat at the Africa Oil Week (AOW) 2026 in Accra, Ghana.
The high-profile session, moderated by Gavin Thompson (Vice Chairman for EMEA at Wood Mackenzie), also featured Mario Bello (EVP and Head of Sub-Saharan Africa Region at Eni).
Monster Growth and Dual-Listed Financial Strength Reflecting on Seplat’s journey in Nigeria’s complex oil and gas landscape, Okon described the company’s trajectory as an “extraordinary story” of resilience.
The Track Record: Seplat borrowed $530 million in its formative years and has already returned $835 million in dividends to investors.
Market Capitalisation: Seplat’s net worth reached $3.93 billion as of late August 2026.Explosive Surge: Driven by strong stock performance, the company’s market cap skyrocketed by 170.10% over the past year.Global Access: Dual listings on both the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) continue to grant Seplat direct access to deep global capital pools.”Don’t get me wrong, it has never been a smooth ride. But the feat we have recorded has been monumental…
We have committed ourselves to deliver a billion U.S. dollars in terms of dividends over the next four or five years. And we’re well on track,” Okon told the audience of investors and policymakers.
Ramping Up Production and Exploration, To anchor its goal of becoming Nigeria’s largest independent, integrated energy company, Seplat is deploying a well-capitalized operational strategy:Production Target: Aiming for 500,000 bpd via joint venture operations.
Asset Optimization: Restoring asset integrity across the current portfolio .New Exploration: Launching fresh seismic data acquisition campaigns to unlock new drilling targets and exploration upside
.Okon attributed these targets to disciplined capital allocation, corporate governance, and a highly liquid balance sheet, stating simply, “We are really hungry.” Driving Nigeria’s Domestic Gas Revolution Beyond crude oil, Seplat is positioning itself as a primary driver of Nigeria’s domestic energy security and industrial transition.
The company’s shallow water assets hold an estimated 12 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas. Seplat plans to rapidly accelerate the monetization of these reserves through pipeline infrastructure.
Additionally, the powerhouse is expanding its footprint in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) market. This move aims to displace traditional biomass cooking fuels in Nigerian homes, directly curbing carbon intensity and addressing domestic environmental health issues
Seplat Energy has proven its model by returning more capital to shareholders than it initially borrowed. With robust financial backing, clear corporate governance, and a dual-pronged oil and gas expansion strategy, the company is positioned to dominate the West African energy landscape.
