Abia State, NDPHC Begin Construction of 7.5MVA Injection Substation in Umuahia

A major milestone toward improving electricity supply in Abia State was achieved on Thursday as the state government, in collaboration with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), officially began the construction of a 7.5MVA, 33/11kV Injection Substation in Umuahia.

The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by Governor Alex Otti (OFR), who described the project as a transformative investment poised to significantly enhance power delivery, strengthen distribution reliability, and modernize the state’s electricity infrastructure.

Project Scope and Components

The project, executed under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), includes:

  • Construction of 1km of 33kV line

  • Construction of 1.2km of 11kV line

  • Installation of two 300kVA distribution substations

  • Provision of 2km of low-tension (LT) line

According to Governor Otti, the project marks the beginning of a broader, long-term plan to upgrade Abia State’s power network and deliver more stable electricity to residents and businesses.

Governor Otti Commends FG, NDPHC, and Power Sector Reforms

Governor Otti expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and NDPHC for selecting Abia State for this critical intervention.
He also applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing power sector reforms, noting that new national policies are enabling:

  • Expanded state participation

  • Increased private-sector investment

  • Deeper global partnerships in power infrastructure

He further disclosed that the state government has made provisions in the 2026 fiscal budget for an additional 7.5MVA Injection Substation, which will bring the total installed capacity in the Ogurube Layout area to 15MVA upon completion.

NDPHC Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Power Supply

The Managing Director/CEO of NDPHC, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, represented by the Executive Director (Networks), Engr. Bello Babayo Bello, emphasized NDPHC’s commitment to delivering sustainable and reliable electricity across Nigeria.

She stated that the Umuahia substation aligns with NDPHC’s mandate to empower communities, spur economic activity, and support long-term national development.

A Model of Strategic Collaboration

Stakeholders described the partnership between the Federal Government, NDPHC, and the Abia State Government as a demonstration of the impact of effective intergovernmental collaboration.

Once completed, the 7.5MVA Injection Substation is expected to:

  • Strengthen electricity supply in Umuahia

  • Support small businesses and commercial activities

  • Facilitate industrial development

  • Improve the overall quality of life for residents in Umuahia and neighboring communities
