172 Host Community Development Trusts Incorporated – NUPRC

The Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission has disclosed that 172 Host Communities Development Trusts have so far been incorporated by oil and gas companies operating in Nigeria.

Under the Petroleum Industry Act, oil and gas companies, known as settlors, are required to contribute three per cent of their operating expenditure from the preceding financial year to a Host Communities Trust Fund for the benefit of their host communities.

Addressing the leadership of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission in Abuja, the NUPRC Chief Executive, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said the commission had been enforcing the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, particularly those relating to host communities and the obligations of operating companies.

Eyesan said the Host Communities Development Trusts had funded the construction of schools, hospitals and other infrastructure in host communities.

According to her, the initiatives had contributed significantly to peace and stability in communities that had previously been volatile.

She added that the improved peace and stability had also led to an increase in oil and gas production.
